12 x 24 Tile

12 x 24 inches is the workhorse large-format size. It covers area quickly, cuts the number of grout joints sharply compared with a 12 x 12, and stays small enough to handle and cut without specialist equipment. Where the size works

On floors, 12 x 24 is the default in kitchens, bathrooms and hallways. On walls it gives a calm, contemporary surface, and it is increasingly used full-height behind a range as an alternative to a traditional backsplash band. Substrate matters at this size

Large-format tile is unforgiving of an uneven wall or floor, because any dip shows as lippage at the joints. Budget for levelling the substrate, and discuss a third-offset rather than a half-offset layout with your installer, which reduces visible lippage on long tiles.
