Mosaic tile is the most flexible format in tile. Because the individual pieces arrive pre-mounted on a mesh or paper sheet, a mosaic follows curves, wraps a niche and works around outlets in a way that a large field tile cannot. It is also the format that lets a small area carry a lot of design without the cost of tiling an entire room. Where mosaics work best
The classic application is a kitchen backsplash, where the run between countertop and upper cabinets is roughly 18 inches and a sheet-mounted mosaic avoids cutting every row. Mosaics are also the standard answer for shower floors, because the extra grout joints give grip and the small pieces let the floor slope correctly towards a drain. Choosing a mosaic
Three things decide how a mosaic reads on a wall. Material sets the maintenance: glass wipes clean and reflects light, natural stone needs sealing, porcelain needs neither. Shape sets the personality, from straightforward squares through herringbone, basketweave, picket and checkerboard. Finish sets the light: polished bounces it, matte absorbs it.
