Shaker Kitchen Cabinets

Shaker is the most requested cabinet door in American kitchens, and it is also the most loosely defined. Home Craft Studio stocks 54 shaker door styles across four cabinet brands – Fabuwood, Forevermark (TSG Cabinetry), CNC Cabinetry and J&K Cabinetry – in framed and frameless construction, full and partial overlay, and classic, wide and slim rail profiles. This guide explains the differences that actually change how a kitchen looks and lasts, so you can shortlist a door before you visit a showroom.

What counts as a shaker kitchen cabinet

A shaker door is a five-piece door: four flat rails and stiles framing a flat recessed center panel, with no applied moulding or raised profile. That is the whole definition. Everything else – rail width, edge detail, overlay, box construction, finish – varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, and those variables are what separate a 1,200 dollar difference between two doors that look almost identical in a photograph.

Because the profile is plain, shaker reads correctly in a traditional kitchen, a transitional kitchen, a farmhouse kitchen and a modern one. That flexibility is why it outsells every other door style we carry, and why it is the safest choice if you plan to sell the house within ten years.

Classic, wide and slim shaker: the three profiles we stock

Rail width is the single detail most buyers miss. The rail is the flat band that frames the center panel. A wider rail reads traditional and substantial; a narrower rail reads contemporary and lets more of the panel show. Our catalogue is tagged so you can shop the two families separately.

Profile Typical rail Reads as Styles we stock
Classic shaker Standard width, plain or with a subtle inner edge Timeless, works in any kitchen 45 of our 54 styles, including Fabuwood Allure Galaxy, Forevermark Shaker Collection, CNC Elegant and the full J&K range
Wide shaker Wider rail, more frame, less panel Heavier, more traditional, strong in large kitchens CNC Elegant uses a 3 inch rail with full overlay
Slim / thin shaker Narrow rail, maximum panel Contemporary, quiet, good for small kitchens 9 styles: Fabuwood Allure Luna, Forevermark Petit Collection, CNC Versailles

If you are torn between the two, a practical rule: in a kitchen under 150 square feet a slim shaker keeps the room from feeling busy, and in a kitchen with an island and tall wall cabinets a classic or wide rail holds the scale better. Our design team will lay both against your actual cabinet run.

The four shaker lines at Home Craft Studio

Fabuwood — 17 shaker styles

Fabuwood Cabinetry is manufactured in Newark, New Jersey, which is why lead times on this line are usually the shortest of the four. Its Allure series uses traditional American framed construction with a plywood box, veneered natural wood interior, solid wood dovetail drawers and Blumotion soft-close slides. We stock two Allure door styles: Galaxy, a classic shaker with subtle inner edges, in nine finishes, and Luna, Fabuwood’s slim shaker, in four. The Quest series – door styles Metro and Discovery – is a partial overlay shaker, which leaves more of the face frame visible and gives a more traditional, furniture-like look. See the full range on the Fabuwood Cabinets page.

Forevermark / TSG Cabinetry — 16 shaker styles

Forevermark is the consumer brand of The Shekia Group, LLC, based in Edison, New Jersey, and is sold only through its dealer network. Its cabinets are all-wood, third-party durability tested, and meet or exceed U.S. EPA emissions standards, with a limited warranty on parts and hardware. We carry twelve doors from the Shaker Collection – including Ice White, Vista White, Greystone, Lait Grey, Nova Light Grey, Pepper Shaker Black, Blaze Black, Woodland Brown, XTerra Blue, Homestead Oak and Champagne Maple – plus four doors from the Petit Collection, the manufacturer’s clean contemporary narrow-rail line. Browse them all on the Forevermark Cabinets (TSG Cabinetry) page.

CNC Cabinetry — 11 shaker styles

CNC gives you the widest spread of shaker profiles in one brand. Elegant is a wide shaker: a full overlay five-piece solid wood door with a 3 inch rail and a reversed raised MDF veneer center panel, mortise and tenon construction, offered in Smoky Grey, White, Stone and Ocean plus an extended paint program. Luxor is a partial overlay shaker with a half inch reveal and a 2-1/2 inch rail, available in Smoky Grey, Misty Grey, Harvest, White and Espresso. Versailles White is CNC’s thin shaker. All three share a 3/4 inch kiln-dried solid hardwood face frame, half inch plywood box and soft-close concealed hinges. Full line on the CNC Cabinetry page.

J&K Cabinetry — 10 shaker styles

J&K is the most consistent of the four on standard features, because there is only one specification across the line: a 3/4 inch thick solid wood full overlay door, 5/8 inch cabinet-grade plywood box, 5/8 inch solid wood dovetail drawers on full-extension soft-close undermount glides, 6-way adjustable soft-close Euro hinges, 3/4 inch plywood adjustable shelves, metal corner brackets in base cabinets and tilt-out trays as standard in sink bases. Ten finishes: White Shaker, Pure, Dove, Pebble, Greige, Hazel, Sage, Castle Grey, Naval and Charcoal. See the J&K Cabinetry page.

Construction compared: what you actually get inside the box

Two shaker doors in the same white can sit on completely different boxes. These are the manufacturer-published standard specifications for the lines we stock.

Line Construction Overlay Box Drawer Hardware
Fabuwood Allure (Galaxy, Luna) Framed Full Plywood, veneered natural wood interior Solid wood dovetail Blumotion soft-close slides
Fabuwood Quest (Metro, Discovery) Framed Partial Manufacturer spec, see product page Manufacturer spec, see product page Soft-close
Forevermark Shaker & Petit Framed Full All-wood, third-party durability tested All-wood Soft-close
CNC Elegant (wide shaker) Framed Full 1/2 in. plywood back and sides, 3/4 in. hardwood frame 3/4 in. solid wood, dovetail Stainless full-extension glides, soft-close hinges
CNC Luxor (2-1/2 in. rail) Framed Partial, 1/2 in. reveal 1/2 in. plywood back, 3/4 in. hardwood frame Slab front Soft-close concealed hinges
J&K Cabinetry Framed Full 5/8 in. cabinet-grade plywood 5/8 in. solid wood, dovetail Soft-close undermount, 6-way hinges

The line that matters most on a long cabinet run is the drawer. Dovetailed solid wood boxes on full-extension undermount glides hold up to daily use in a way that stapled particleboard boxes do not, and every shaker line above specifies them as standard.

Framed vs frameless, full vs partial overlay

Framed construction attaches a solid wood face frame to the front of the box. It is the traditional American method, it adds rigidity, and it is what all four of our shaker lines use. Frameless construction attaches doors straight to the box, which removes the frame and widens the opening – useful if storage volume is your priority, and the reason Fabuwood offers frameless series alongside Allure.

Overlay is how much of the frame the door covers. Full overlay leaves only a thin reveal between doors and gives the near-seamless look most people picture when they think of a new kitchen. Partial overlay – CNC Luxor and Fabuwood Quest – deliberately shows a band of face frame, which looks more traditional and, as a rule, costs less. Neither is better; they are different looks, and a showroom door sample settles it in about thirty seconds.

Choosing a shaker finish

White and off-white

Still the default, and the reason is resale rather than fashion. Our white shaker options run from crisp bright whites to warm creams: Forevermark Ice White and Vista White, Fabuwood Galaxy Frost, CNC Elegant White and Luxor White, J&K White Shaker and Pure. Shop them all under white kitchen cabinets.

Grey, greige and stone

The most forgiving choice in a kitchen with mixed lighting, and it hides everyday wear better than white. Options include Forevermark Greystone, Lait Grey and Nova Light Grey, CNC Smoky Grey and Misty Grey and Stone, Fabuwood Galaxy Cobblestone and Nickel, and J&K Dove, Pebble, Greige and Castle Grey. See grey kitchen cabinets and light colour cabinets.

Blue and green

Usually the best place to spend a colour decision is an island or a run of base cabinets, with white or wood above. Forevermark XTerra Blue, Fabuwood Galaxy Indigo and Luna Indigo, CNC Elegant Ocean and J&K Naval and Sage all work as an accent. Browse blue kitchen cabinets.

Black and deep tones

Black shaker has moved from accent to full-kitchen in the last two years, and it needs good lighting to work. Forevermark Pepper Shaker Black and Blaze Black, J&K Charcoal, CNC Luxor Espresso and Fabuwood Galaxy Mocha are the options we stock. See dark colour cabinets and espresso cabinets.

Natural wood

Wood-look shaker is the strongest trend in the lines we carry. Forevermark Homestead Oak, Champagne Maple, Woodland Brown and Petit Oak, Fabuwood Galaxy Timber and Luna Timber and Kona, CNC Luxor Harvest and J&K Hazel. See light wood cabinets, medium tones and rustic kitchen cabinets.

What a shaker kitchen costs, and how to get a real number

Any figure quoted without your cabinet list is a guess. Shaker pricing moves on four things: how many linear feet of cabinetry you need, whether the door is partial or full overlay, whether the box is plywood or furniture board, and how many accessories – trash pull-outs, lazy susans, tilt-out trays, tall pantry units – you add. The same white shaker kitchen can land at very different totals depending on those four alone.

Three ways to get a real number from us: use the kitchen price estimator for a ballpark, compare our packaged layouts in kitchen deals, Signature deals, Essential deals and Elite deals, or book a free design consultation and get a line-item quote. If you are weighing new cabinets against a lower-cost alternative, our guide to cabinet refacing vs replacing works through the cost comparison honestly.

Order a door sample before you commit

Cabinet finishes photograph badly. Whites shift warm or cool under LED, greys pick up the colour of the floor, and a wood grain can look completely different in north-facing light. Ask us for door samples of your shortlist and hold two or three against your countertop material and your flooring before you sign anything. If you are still choosing a countertop, our quartz vs quartzite comparison and the quartz countertop range are the natural next step, and backsplash tile is easiest to pick once the door is locked.

You can also test combinations digitally with our kitchen visualizer, and see how shaker sits against the other door profiles we carry in the kitchen cabinet buying guide and the full kitchen cabinet range.

See shaker cabinets in person in NJ and Brooklyn

A cabinet door is difficult to judge on a screen, so the fastest way to finish your shortlist is to come and handle one. Visit Clifton, New Jersey, North Bergen, New Jersey, Newark, New Jersey or Brooklyn, New York, or use the location finder. Call (973) 685-0208 or book an appointment and we will have your shortlist pulled before you arrive. We also handle installation, and you can read what is included on our design services page.

Shaker kitchen cabinet FAQ

What is the difference between shaker and thin shaker?

Only the width of the rail, the flat band framing the center panel. A thin or slim shaker uses a narrower rail, which shows more of the flat panel and reads more contemporary. Fabuwood Allure Luna, the Forevermark Petit Collection and CNC Versailles are the slim shaker doors we stock; the other 45 styles are classic or wide.

Are shaker cabinets going out of style?

No. Shaker has been in continuous production since the 19th century and is still the highest-volume door style across every line we carry. Its neutrality is exactly why it survives design cycles, and it is the lowest-risk choice if resale value matters to you.

Which shaker brand is best value?

It depends on which variable you care about. CNC Luxor is partial overlay and the most economical of the four. J&K is the most consistent on standard features because every door shares one specification. Fabuwood Allure is made locally in Newark so it usually ships fastest. Forevermark offers the widest colour range across its Shaker and Petit collections. Bring your layout to a design consultation and we will price the same kitchen in more than one line.

Are shaker cabinets solid wood?

The door frame is, in every line here. The center panel and the box vary: CNC Elegant uses a reversed raised MDF veneer center panel, J&K specifies 100 percent solid wood with a 5/8 inch plywood box, and Fabuwood Allure uses a plywood box with a veneered natural wood interior. Always read the construction specification, not just the word solid.

What colour shaker cabinet is easiest to keep clean?

Mid-tone greys and greiges. White shows splashes near the range and near the sink, and very dark matte finishes show fingerprints and dust. Dove, Pebble, Greige, Smoky Grey and Greystone are the most forgiving options in our range.

Can I mix two shaker finishes in one kitchen?

Yes, and it is one of the few two-tone schemes that consistently works, because the door profile stays constant. The usual formula is a darker or wood base run with white or light grey wall cabinets, or a contrast island. Keep both finishes inside the same brand so the sheen and the rail profile match exactly.

Do you install the cabinets?

Yes. See our installation service page or ask during your design consultation.

How long does a shaker kitchen take to arrive?

Lead times depend on the line, the finish and the accessory list, and they change through the year, so we confirm a current date in writing on every quote rather than publishing a number here. Locally manufactured lines are generally quickest.
